# Decoration Engineering: The Trade-Off Matrix Behind Printing, Coating, and Metal Effects
TL;DR — The nine verified decoration capabilities in the Veqa program cover printing (screen, pad, UV, heat transfer), stamping (hot stamping), coating (spraying/UV), and metal effects (electroplating, anodizing/surface treatment), with custom color matching developed per project. The engineering loop that decides whether a finish survives is adhesion verification plus color-difference control — both capability-level tests, configured against project specifications.
Why: Decoration Failures Are Batch Failures
Decoration is the last thing a consumer notices and the first thing that fails:
- Adhesion failure means a whole batch of decorated parts is scrapped or reworked.
- Color drift between approved sample and production run is a brand-integrity incident.
- Material mismatch (finish on the wrong substrate) converts a "nice-to-have" into a claim against the project.
It is therefore not an art department decision — it is an engineering decision with its own verification loop.
How: The Nine Verified Capabilities and Their Fit
3.1 Capability matrix
| Group | Capability (verified naming) | Where it typically lands |
|---|---|---|
| Printing | Pad Printing | Small curved surfaces — closures, pens, tubes |
| Printing | UV Printing | Cured-in-place graphics with high durability needs |
| Printing | Heat Transfer Printing | Full-wrap multi-color decoration on cylinders |
| Stamping | Hot Stamping | Metallic foil accents on caps, collars, bodies |
| Coating | Spraying / Coating | Uniform color and protective coatings |
| Coating | UV Processing | Cured clear or colored coating layers |
| Metal effect | Electroplating | Metal-finish caps, collars, pump components |
| Metal effect | Anodizing / Surface Treatment | Anodized aluminum surfaces (aluminum parts) |
| Color | Custom Color Matching | Developed per project alongside decoration validation |
3.2 The substrate conversation
Substrate choice drives what a decoration can do. The verified material system covers PP, PE, PET, PETG, PMMA, ABS, AS, PCTG-class resins, glass, and aluminum — and each family carries different surface behavior for inks and coatings. The program's material records do not publish per-material decoration-compatibility ratings; affinity decisions are therefore made per project on the basis of adhesion verification, not assumed by material name.
3.3 The verification loop
<pre class="language-mermaid"><code>flowchart LR
A[Design + material pair] –> B[Sample decoration]
B –> C{Adhesion test}
C –>|Fail| D[Re-work surface prep / process]
D –> B
C –>|Pass| E{Color difference check}
E –>|Drift| F[Re-balance ink / coating]
F –> B
E –>|Approved| G[Approve sample]
G –> H[Production + batch verification]
</code></pre>
Adhesion and color-difference checks are two of the twelve quality-program testing capabilities — both configured against project specifications.
What: The Trade-Off Matrix
| Decision | Lean A | Lean B | Trade-off to state |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metal effect | Electroplating (rich metal look) | Anodizing (aluminum + engineered feel) | Anodizing is an aluminum-part route; electroplating applies across more substrate classes |
| Coating | Spray/coating (uniform color) | UV processing (cure speed, hardness) | Cure time vs durability profile |
| Foil vs ink | Hot stamping (premium foil) | Printing (graphic flexibility) | Cost per part vs tonal flexibility |
| PCR substrate | Standard finish routes | PCR resins | Recycled-content substrates should re-verify adhesion before committing tooling — validate, don't assume |
Every cell of this matrix is a project conversation: capability exists (verified), fit is decided by evidence.
Gotchas
- Adhesion is verified, not assumed. No per-material durability rating is published in the material system; each substrate-finish pair is proved by the adhesion test.
- Anodizing presumes aluminum. The anodizing route belongs to aluminum parts; it is not a generic metal-effect option for plastics.
- Custom color matching is a project service, not a standalone capability record. It is developed during tooling and decoration validation — budget the iteration loop.
- PCR substrates change the conversation. Recycled-content resins can behave differently under decoration; re-verify before production.
- Trademark-safe language. Where the project references a naming system for colors, use "target color reference" rather than brand-owned trademark names, and confirm wording with the brand team.
- No "vacuum metallization" claim. The verified program names electroplating; unverified process names are not published.
